Best Free Knitting Patterns to Learn to Knit

As a relatively new knitter myself, I’ve spent a number of hours searching for patterns that are free, cute and easy to learn. It’s only recently that I’ve stumbled upon some amazing blogs that provide a wealth of information!

If you’ve only just recently picked up some knitting needles, here are some of my favorite free patterns to start with:

1. Mountain Cowl by Purl Soho

Purl Soho is one of the first knitting blogs I’ve stumbled upon, and remains one of my favorites to this day. They have a ton of beautiful, free and well explained patterns that are perfect for beginners, and also have quite a few detailed tutorials. The Mountain Cowl is a cozy and warm cowl knit with Purl Soho’s very own luxurious Gentle Giant merino wool.

2.  Malt Baby Blanket by Tin Can Knits

It’s only been recently that I’ve came across the Tin Can Knits knitting blog, but I absolutely love it. It’s full of detailed tutorials and beautiful patterns. The Malt Baby Blanket is part of the Simple Collection, which is a collection of free patterns designed with beginner knitters in mind.

3. Cocoon Slouchy Hat Pattern by La Maison Rililie

La Maison Rililie has a whole section devoted to their lovely free patterns, most of which are well suited towards beginning knitters. They also have excellent tutorials for more intermediate to advanced knitters, such as knitting German short rows.

4. Last Minute Schmatta by Mason-Dixon Knitting

Not only does the Mason-Dixon Knitting blog have great patterns, but they are also a great blog to follow to keep up to date on news in the knitting world. I love how each of their posts are started with either a ‘Dear Ann’ or a ‘Dear Kay’, as it is made up of two bloggers from different parts of the country who write back and forth. The Last Minute Schmatta is a simple cowl pattern that can easily be customized to fit the style of the wearer. I can imagine knitting this using a multicolored yarn in an alpaca blend with large wooden buttons!

5. Simple Skyp Socks by Adrienne Ku

I used this sock pattern to knit my dad some socks for his birthday. I also used the same ‘skyp’ pattern to knit my nephew a toque for Christmas. It produces a lovely stretchy sock with just enough detail to keep you interested but not too much that it’s over complicated. A great beginner sock pattern.
